After I got Brent safely on the plane to
                Utah and psychiatric care,
I pretty much just shut down.

I had been so stressed and had just
willed myself through the whole episode.

President Nichols said he was going to put me
with a greenie, a Bolivian who would be arriving
from the CEM in a few days.

“If you’d like, you can stay here until he gets here. I know you get along well with the elders in the office, and it might be better not to be alone.”

Dannelly was finally leaving the mission office and Cochabamba. He had been in the mission for almost a year and had never been anywhere but Cochabamba. He was going to Tarija, to Rama 3, the branch where I had worked. Part of me wished him luck, but then I thought we had done pretty well down there.

He couldn’t get a flight out of Cochabamba,
so he would have to fly to La Paz and catch
a plane there for Tarija, but all the flights
were booked up for the next few days.

I had an idea, which I suggested to the president:

“What if Dannelly goes to La Paz with me for a few days and then gets on his plane for Tarija when the greenie gets here? Then neither one of us is alone, nor I can actually get some work done for the next few days.”

The president thought this was an excellent idea,
so we went to Prado Tours and got a couple of tickets for La Paz.

Among missionaries, La Paz was not a Favorite place to be.

Because of the harsh weather and poor living
conditions for most missionaries in La Paz,
a lot of missionaries got sick there.

The only places worse than La Paz in this respect were Potosi and Oruro, two mining towns high in the Andes, both of which lacked La Paz’s amenities, such as they were.

One hermana I knew described La Paz as “Oruro with shopping.”

Dannelly had seen photos of La Paz and had heard a lot of stories, but I’m not sure he had been prepared for it.

“It’s so beautiful and yet so desolate,” he said as we approached to land in El Alto.

“It kind of reminds me of Dante’s hell,” he chuckled.

After we got our luggage into the apartment, we walked up the Calle Potosi to find a restaurant I’d always wanted to go to.

It had been listed in a lot of the tourist guides as a popular spot, but the missionaries never went there.

Right on the corner of the Prado near the Plaza San Francisco,
the restaurant was tucked down in a basement next to the sidewalk,
so you could see people’s feet walking by as you ate.

It was nothing special, and we never went back.

We sat in a booth by the wall, talking.

He was excited about getting out into the country for once,
and all I could talk about was how harrowing my experience
 with Brent had been.

“You seem a little shell-shocked,” Dannelly said.

“Wouldn’t you be?”

I had so badly wanted things to work with Brent, and I blamed myself in so many ways for what had happened.

“It wasn’t your fault,” Dannelly said. “He was depressed before you got him, and there was nothing you could do.”

“If we just could have had some success,” I insisted. “If anything, good had happened, he might have been OK.”

“No. Have you ever thought that he needed to have this happen, or no one would have noticed the depression?”

Nothing anyone had said had made me feel better until then.

Maybe that was it.

Brent had been living so long with depression, and no one had noticed.

But Bolivia had pushed him over the edge, and finally they noticed.

 He was getting help.

It was kind of a twisted way to look at things, but it helped.

We finished our dinners and started back to the apartment.

“I had no idea it was so cold here,” Dannelly said.

“At least it’s not snowing,” I laughed.

As we passed the Cruce Copacabana, I realized Dannelly wasn’t with me; I looked back and saw him at the bottom of the hill, just this side of the bridge, leaning against a telephone pole and gasping for breath.

“I’m glad I don’t have to work here,” he said when he got to where I was waiting.
“You get used to it.”

The next morning, I woke up and realized I didn’t feel like doing much of anything. I had packed all my things to go to Cochabamba so that Brent wouldn’t know it was just him who was leaving, so I unpacked my things and put them in the wardrobe in the corner.

“The greenie doesn’t get here until the day after tomorrow, so we have two days. What do you want to do?” I asked.

“It’s your area, so you decide.”

“Honestly, I don’t feel like doing anything. I’m exhausted.”

“Fine with me.”

And that was it.

Th next two days we did a little shopping,
I showed him around the city,
 and we ate at restaurants.

The second afternoon we sat for a long time on
a bench in the Plaza Murillo and watched the pigeons in silence.

I suppose now I would say I was just decompressing,
but I was feeling a mixture of guilt and relief and
just not doing anything and enjoying myself.

The morning that he was leaving, and
the greenie was coming arrived too soon.

I woke up that day feeling terribly sick with the flu, but I crawled out of bed and got Dannelly to the airport.

Then I took a taxi down to the Float Station to wait for the greenie’s bus.

I stood there shivering in the cold for over an hour, and then the bus pulled into the station.

By the time he arrived, I was really feeling sick, so we dropped off his luggage and went immediately to a pharmacy, where I bought some medicine.

Back at the apartment,
I told him I was sick
and needed to rest,
and then I crawled under
the covers and went to sleep.
